WHY ?Well that is one of most frequent questions we have been asked and it's not at all hard to answer really. We were fed up with the constant grind of work , long hours, low pay, etc Our Daughter and Son are grown up now and have lifes and loves of their own so we decided that it was time for us to take early retirement and start to enjoy life.We hadn't visited Bulgaria before and our friends and family thought we were absolutely crazy and perhaps we are but we love it here.Bulgaria isn't for everyone and recent publicity has seen Bulgaria take a little bit of a knock but it's making steady progress within the EU and even in the year and a half since we came here there have been many changes i'm glad to say for the better. But like in the UK don't believe everything you read in the papers, people are still scaremongering about Bulgaria but it's going to be one of the strongest up and coming countries within a very short time span so I guess it's watch this space. Bulgaria is very much like my homeland which is Scotland it has the same rolling hills and mountain veiws and some of the most fantastic scenery ever, it has an abundance of wildlife too with some of the most fantastic Birds of Prey just flying freely about. The Climate The climate in Bulgaria is classed as mediterranean with long hot summers and cold harsh winters often with a good fall of snow, Cost of living The cost of living is still relatively cheaper than other places with fresh produce available at your local markets and indeed within your own village from neighbours or if you very brave your own garden.Growing vegetables is easy and you will have no end of help from your neighbours, they will keep you right as to when and what to plant. The Famous RakiaRakia is the national drink of Bulgaria and is drunk on a daily basis all over, it's a spirit that can made from any fruit but is more often than not made of Plum (sliva) or Grapes (grohzdi). It is extremely strong stuff and often has a proof of 50-65% it is drunk neat but is accompanied by a glass of lemonade or other juice. It's certainly not for the faint hearted and you are served it if you call on your neighbours as is the traditional Sirene Cheese which can be mad from either cow's milk, goats milk or sheeps milk.
