50 Leva fine for not wearing a seat belt.
50 Leva fine for motorcyclists not wearing a helmet
50 Leva fine for passengers not wearing seatbelts
20 Leva fine for driving in the bus lanes.

Insurance

Wherever you are travelling in the EU your car insurance policy will automatically provide THIRD PARTY LIABILITY required by law If you have Fully Comprehensive cover in the UK you must check to see whether it will cover you for driving the EU
The cost of Third Party Insurance in Bulgaria can be anything between 100-250 Leva per year and is mandatory You can also take out Fully Comprehensive insurance which runs along side your third party insurance and can be anything from a couple of hundred leva upwards. We paid 980 Leva for a 1600 Kia Cerato 55 plate
The sanction for the driver / as a physical person /caught without third party liabilty is from 400 Leva to 600 Leva however in case of a second infringement the fine is 2000 Leva
The sanction for a driver/ as a Juridical person/ without third party liability is from 2000 Leva to 5000 Leva however in case of second infringment the fine is from 10000 Leva to 40000 Leva
Children up to the age of 12 yrs and less than 150 cm in height are not allowed to travel in the front seat. They can only travel in the back with special safety belts
For Traffic law infringment by drivers without permanent residence in Bulgaria a staement of written explanations or objections attached is drawn up on the spot and brought to the penalty body. On the same day the relative authorities will make a decision and whne a fine is imposed on the offender, the latter deposits the amount to an account indicated in the penal decree. After the fine is paid the papers/driving licence, ID papers etc are given back to the driver.
