Education System
There are 3 types of schools in Bulgaria State run schools municipal and private (including religious) the most popular being the State run school.
State education is free and the academic standard is high.
There are three levels primary (1st to 4th grade),
basic (5th to 7th grade)
secondary (8th to 12th grade)
The school year starts on 15 September, and pupils study on a morning and afternoon shift basis over two terms.
Unlike the Uk or perhaps other countries Bulgaria's Primary education starts from the age of six or seven and last eight years.
Compulsory education is undertaken up to the age of 16 (grade 10).
Foreign language classes start at primary school, a second one is added in Year Seven.
Secondary education is three, four or five years long depending on the school specialisation.
The top mark in Bulgarian schools is a six, while the lowest, a fail, is a two.
A new operational National Programme was launched in 2006 for pre-school and school education. This ensures completion of pre-secondary school after Year Seven and compulsory Secondary education until Year Ten. As part of this programme, there will be an increased number of foreign language and computer literacy classes as well as more vocational training from Year Seven to 12.
The majority of school graduates continue their education at universities in Bulgaria or abroad.
